How fraction operations work

Adding or subtracting fractions requires a common denominator first (found via the least common multiple), then the numerators are combined. Multiplying fractions is direct — multiply numerators together and denominators together. Dividing means multiplying by the reciprocal of the second fraction.

Automatic simplification

Results are automatically reduced to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor (GCD) — so ⁴⁄₈ becomes ½, for example.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter negative fractions? Yes, enter a negative sign in the numerator (like -1) to represent a negative fraction.

What if I enter 0 as a denominator? Division by zero is undefined — the calculator will show an error for that input.
